Blood Sugar Highs and Lows

It's very important for patients suffering from diabetes and type 2 diabetes to control their blood sugar levels, because they can experience serious problems when they have high or low blood sugar levels. High blood sugar can lead to long term problems while low blood sugar can lead to life threatening complications.

Low Blood Sugar

Low blood sugar, also known as hypoglycemia, is not discussed as frequently as high blood sugar, but it is a serious concern. Blood sugar levels that are below 80 mg per deciliter can lead to life threatening problems in the body for patients suffering from diabetes and type 2 diabetes. People with low blood sugar or hypoglycemia could show the following symptoms:

  • Sweating
  • Queasiness
  • Restlessness
  • Absentmindedness
  • Shaking
  • Hunger
  • Sleepiness
  • Numbness and Tingling

If you are suffering from diabetes or type 2 diabetes and have the above mentioned symptoms, it's essential that your blood sugar is checked and if it's very low then you should consume a small amount of fluid that contains sugar. A few small pieces of candy or fruit juice would do in this case.

If your blood sugar is still low after about 15 minutes and still have the same symptoms, then you should consume some more sugar. Make a point of seeking help from your health provider if this happens to you frequently.

Many times people with low blood sugar levels will faint or become unconscious therefore you shouldn't do things that would put you to risk, such as operating machinery or driving, when this happens to you.

High Blood Sugar

High blood sugar levels can also cause harm to the body. Temperate high blood sugar levels normally become long term with deteriorating complications in the body. Very high blood sugar levels could result in problems such as ketoacidosis and hyperosmolar hyperglycemic nonketotic syndrome. Diabetic and type 2 diabetic people with high blood sugar levels could show the following symptoms:

  • High Fever
  • Xerostomia
  • Weakness localized to one area of the body
  • Hallucinations
  • Vision loss
  • Sleepiness
  • Confusion
  • Non-sweaty dried out skin
  • Extreme Thirst

Make a point of seeing your health care provider as soon as possible if you are experiencing the symptoms listed above.
